Today, after decades of silence, we are able to show you Jewish Nice, its community, its history and its heritage. Nice was known as the last refuge in Europe during the Second World War and as well as becoming a magnet for Jews throughout Europe, it also has a rich and captivating Jewish story. Unlike so many cities destroyed during the war or whose Jewish population were dispersed, Nice was never bombarded, its infrastructure remains intact and its Jewish community strong.
A half day morning private walking visit of Jewish Nice takes between three and four hours and includes exclusive access to the private Synagogues, the 19th century Jewish cemetery, the monuments to the Righteous among the Nations, the new Wall of Deportees, the Jewish ghetto and particularly the unique story of Nice during the war with its networks of Jewish resistance. Our visit will take you from the fourteenth century until the present community.
From its Medieval ghetto in the Old City with underground tunnels and wall carvings, to the construction of both Sephardi and Ashkenazi Synagogues in the 19th century after the emancipation of Jews throughout Europe, the Jewish heritage in Nice is unique and memorable. Unlike Italy or France, Nice since Medieval times was part of a small Duchy called Savoy, and therefore neither subject to the French king who expelled the Jews in 1501 or the Italians.
For an extended day, we combine local Nice with a sophisticated tailored Jewish cultural experience. Often consider the highlight of the trip, this consists of a delicious homemade Provençal lunch held at a private home in Nice together with invited guests whose personal experiences and/or present activities will allow you to meet and exchange first-hand with locals to share the French and European Jewish world today in an intimate, safe and private environment. Following Lunch, time permitting, a short tour of the highlights of Nice is provided.
This is bespoke private tour, customized for each client. Prices on request.
