Jews settled here in the 15th–16th centuries. Kings of Poland granted them trade privileges, and by 1570 the Jewish community owned 70 homes. Most importantly, Medzhybizh is the birthplace of the Hasidic movement—the home of Israel ben Eliezer, the Baal Shem Tov, founder of Hasidism.
