Bratislava Jewish Heritage Tour – Explore Centuries of Jewish History

Bratislava Jewish Heritage Tour offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich and complex history of Jewish life in Bratislava, a city that was for centuries an important center of Jewish culture, scholarship, and community in Central Europe.

Jewish presence in Bratislava dates back to the medieval era. In 1291, King Andrew III Arpád granted a municipal charter that allowed Jews to reside within the city walls, elect their own mayor, and pay taxes directly to the king. Despite periods of expulsion, including a significant one in 1526, Jewish life endured and eventually flourished again.

In 1599, under the patronage of Count Pálffy, Jews were invited back—this time to settle in a narrow area between the castle hill and the city walls, later known as Judengasse. This remained the only permitted area for Jewish residence until 1840.

During the 19th century, Bratislava became a major hub of Jewish scholarship. The renowned rabbi Chatam Sofer established a yeshiva that attracted students from across Europe. At the same time, a modern Jewish primary school was opened by the more progressive faction of the community. This led to the formation of two distinct Jewish congregations: Orthodox and Neolog, each with its own synagogue.

Tragically, most of Bratislava’s Jewish community perished during the Holocaust. Much of the Jewish architectural heritage was later destroyed, including the Orthodox synagogue (demolished in 1961) and the rest of Judengasse and the Neolog synagogue (razed in 1967 during construction of the SNP Bridge).

Today, a small but active Jewish community continues to live in Bratislava. The most important sites on our Bratislava Jewish Heritage Tour include the Chatam Sofer Memorial, the Jewish Museum, and the remaining synagogue.
