Private Jewish Heritage Tour of Lisbon

Discover centuries of Jewish history, faith, and resilience on a Private Jewish Heritage Tour of Lisbon, exploring the Portuguese capital’s hidden Jewish landmarks, vibrant neighborhoods, and rich Sephardic legacy. This full-day tour offers a meaningful journey through the city’s historic sites and stories that shaped Jewish life in Portugal.

Morning – Jewish Heritage & Old Lisbon

Begin your tour around 8:30 a.m. with a panoramic view from Edward VII Park, overlooking the Tagus River and Lisbon’s oldest quarters. Your guide introduces the history of the first Jewish settlers in the Iberian Peninsula and their influence on Portugal’s development.

Continue to Marquês de Pombal Square, named for the 18th-century Prime Minister Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, himself of Jewish descent, who abolished the distinction between “New” and “Old” Christians in 1773.
Visit Ohel Jacob Synagogue (Crypto-Jewish Community Synagogue) on Av. Elias Garcia, followed by Shaare Tikva Synagogue on Rua Alexandre Herculano — Lisbon’s main synagogue, built in 1904 by architect Ventura Terra. Inside, admire beautiful stained-glass windows, paintings by Veloso Salgado, and an ornate silver lamp by Christofanetti.

Drive along Avenida da Liberdade to Rossio Square, the former seat of the Inquisition, and to Praça da Figueira and Martim Moniz, where remnants of an ancient Jewish cemetery were discovered. Depending on interest, your guide may include a visit to Lisbon’s current Jewish Cemetery.

Climb to St. George’s Castle for sweeping views of the city, the Tagus River, and the 25 de Abril Bridge. Then stroll through Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest quarters, along Rua da Judiaria, the heart of the medieval Jewish Quarter. See Igreja da Conceição Velha, built on the site of one of Lisbon’s earliest synagogues, and end the morning at Praça do Comércio, a majestic square that once hosted public Inquisition trials.

Depending on time, your guide may also include a short visit to Praça do Município, Chiado, and Bairro Alto, where the 16th-century Jewish philanthropist Guedelha Palaçano helped design Lisbon’s first planned neighborhood.
Lunch break at leisure (kosher options available upon request).

Afternoon – Belém & Portugal’s Golden Age

In the afternoon, explore Belém, once a departure point for Portugal’s great explorers. See the Jerónimos Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões, and admire the Belém Tower, guarding the mouth of the Tagus River. Visit the Monument to the Discoveries, honoring Portugal’s navigators — including several New Christians who contributed to the Age of Discovery. Drive by the Coach Museum, the Presidential Palace, and Square of the Empire before returning to your hotel or ship along the scenic Lisbon waterfront.
