Tuscany – Land of Good Food and Jewish History
Jewish Heritage Tuscany Tour
Embark on a captivating Jewish Heritage journey through Tuscany, where breathtaking landscapes, world-renowned cuisine, and deeply rooted Jewish history come together in one unforgettable experience. This curated itinerary invites you to explore medieval towns, vibrant cultural centers, and centuries-old Jewish sites hidden in the heart of Italy’s most enchanting region.
Jewish life in Tuscany dates back to 1160, with its most dynamic era unfolding during the 16th century. Florence and Siena established ghettos, while Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici issued the Livornina laws, granting Jewish merchants religious freedom and commercial privileges in Livorno and Pisa. As a result, many Sephardic refugees from Spain settled in these cities—especially in Livorno, famously known as “the city without a ghetto.”
Despite centuries of political struggles for regional power, Tuscany preserves remarkable Jewish heritage sites. Pitigliano, often called “Little Jerusalem,” was once Italy’s most vibrant rural Jewish center. Here you can still visit the historic mikveh, the kosher bakery for unleavened bread, and traditional shops—and enjoy a tasting of the celebrated Bianco di Pitigliano wine.
In Siena, known worldwide for the Palio horse race, Jewish history survives in the streets of the former ghetto and the beautifully preserved synagogue. Similarly, Florence, the artistic jewel of Italy, reveals its own Jewish heritage in its magnificent Moorish-style synagogue and the narrow streets of the former Jewish quarter—alongside iconic landmarks like the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio.
Further west, Livorno became a symbol of tolerance in the 17th century, welcoming Jewish, Turkish, and Moorish merchants with complete freedom of religion and trade. In Pisa, Jewish history echoes through one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the world, featuring Hebrew inscriptions dating back to 1274.
Discover centuries of Jewish traditions, culture, and resilience woven into the fabric of Italy’s most picturesque cities.
