Private Jewish Heritage Tour from Marseilles Port – Provence, France

Embark on a Private Jewish Heritage Tour from Marseilles Port, exploring centuries of Jewish history across Provence — one of the most fascinating regions in southern France.

Overview

In the 14th century, Provence became a refuge for Jews exiled from the Kingdom of France by Philip the Fair and Charles VI. When Provence was annexed to France in 1481, the Pope of Avignon welcomed the Jewish community, allowing Jewish life and culture to flourish once again.

Tour Itinerary

8:30 AM – Depart from Marseilles Port
Meet your private driver-guide and begin your Jewish Heritage journey through Provence.

Cavaillon – Synagogue and Judeo-Comtadin Museum

Your first stop is Cavaillon, home to one of the most beautiful and best-preserved 18th-century synagogues in France — a masterpiece of Comtadin Baroque art. The synagogue features Louis XV-style furnishings and houses the Judeo-Comtadin Museum, which showcases the daily life and traditions of the Jewish communities of Provence.

10:30 AM – Depart for Carpentras
Dating back to 1357, Carpentras once had a large Jewish population, making up nearly one-fifth of the town. Visit the Carpentras Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in France, built between 1741 and 1743 on the site of a 14th-century predecessor. Its plain exterior hides a stunning Rococo sanctuary influenced by Italian design.

Inside, you’ll find the Bimah opposite the Aron Kodesh, an 18th-century feature of Italianate architecture. The basement preserves traces of a matzo oven and mikvah (ritual bath), revealing how the Jewish community practiced its faith during centuries of restriction.

Lunch on your own — enjoy local Provençal cuisine or a kosher meal upon request.

Avignon – Jewish Quarter and Synagogue (Exterior Visit)

Continue to Avignon, where Jewish settlement dates back to the first century after the destruction of the Second Temple (70 A.D.). By the 13th century, the Jewish quarter, or carrière, stood at Rue Jacob and Place Jerusalem — the site of the present-day synagogue.
The small walled ghetto once held over 1,000 people within 100 square yards. Despite strict limitations imposed by the Church, Avignon’s Jewish community preserved its traditions and identity through centuries of change.

2:30 PM – Return to Marseilles Port
Enjoy a scenic 1.5-hour drive back to Marseilles, arriving around 4:15 PM.
Synagogue visits are subject to confirmation.
