Day 1: Arrival in Sofia – Jewish and Historic Sofia Walking Tour
Arrive in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel. Begin your discovery of Jewish Bulgaria and its vibrant culture with a walking tour of the historic center. Highlights include:
- Church of St. Sofia
- The iconic Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral
- The Museum of Icons
- Church of St. Nedelya, the Rotunda of St. George (2nd century – Sofia’s oldest building), and the Old Mosque
Overnight in Sofia.
Day 2: Sofia – Monastery of St. Joakim Osogovski – Skopje
Travel to North Macedonia, with a stop at the Monastery of St. Joakim Osogovski, one of the country’s most important Orthodox sites. Continue to Skopje, the capital. Visit:
- Cathedral of St. Clement of Ohrid
- Holocaust Memorial Center for the Jews of Macedonia, built on the grounds of the former Jewish quarter
- Historic Jewish neighborhoods and landmarks
- Meet members of the local Jewish community of Skopje
Overnight in Skopje.
Day 3: Skopje – Tetovo – Painted Mosque – Ohrid
Explore the old town of Skopje, visiting the 6th-century Fortress, Old Bazaar, Mustafa Pasha Mosque, and Church of St. Spas with its breathtaking iconostasis.
Continue to Tetovo to see the famous Painted Mosque (Aladza). Visit the St. Jovan Bigorski Monastery, an essential spiritual center in Macedonia. Arrive in Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 4: Jewish and Christian Heritage in Ohrid – St. Naum Monastery
Discover ancient Ohrid with visits to:
- Samoil Fortress
- Roman Theatre
- St. Sophia Cathedral (11th century)
- Church of St. John at Kaneo, with Byzantine-Armenian architecture
Afternoon: Excursion to St. Naum Monastery, near the Albanian border. Return to Ohrid.
Overnight in Ohrid.
Day 5: Ohrid – Heraclea – Bitola – Stobi – Berovo
Drive to Bitola, once home to over 3,500 Jews before WWII. Visit:
- Heraclea Lyncestis, founded by Philip II
- Bitola’s center and Jewish heritage sites, including WWII history
Continue to Stobi, a major Roman city with a Jewish synagogue rebuilt by Tiberius Claudius Polycharmos, an early leader of the Jewish community. End the day in Berovo.
Overnight in Berovo.
Day 6: Berovo – Rila Monastery – Plovdiv
Return to Bulgaria. Visit the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery, a symbol of Bulgarian national identity and spiritual resilience, founded in the 10th century. Learn about its key role in preserving Bulgarian culture during Ottoman rule.
Travel to Plovdiv, one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.
Overnight in Plovdiv.
Day 7: Jewish Plovdiv – Bachkovo Monastery – Sephardic Legacy
Morning visit to Bachkovo Monastery, where two Christian bishops who protected Bulgarian Jews during WWII are buried.
Return to Plovdiv for a deep dive into its Jewish history:
- Ancient synagogue ruins and mosaics (3rd century CE)
- Visit the Zion Synagogue
- Learn about Plovdiv’s Jewish community from the Ottoman period to modern day
- Visit the Old Town, Roman Theatre, Ethnographic Museum, and Imaret Mosque
Overnight in Plovdiv.
Day 8: Kazanlak – Thracian Tomb – Veliko Tarnovo
Travel to Kazanlak, home to the Thracian Tomb (UNESCO) and remnants of the Jewish cemetery.
Continue to Etar Ethnographic Reserve, and visit the Church of the Nativity in Shipka. Arrive in Veliko Tarnovo, medieval capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Explore:
- Tsarevets Fortress
- Samovodska Charshiya (craft market)
Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.
Day 9: Arbanassi – Troyan Monastery – Return to Sofia
Morning visit to Arbanassi and the Church of the Nativity. Continue to Troyan Monastery, home of the miraculous Three-Handed Virgin icon and artworks by Zahari Zograf. Return to Sofia.
Overnight in Sofia.
Day 10: Jewish Sofia – Synagogue, Museum & Community Visit
A full day dedicated to exploring Jewish Sofia:
- Jewish Museum of History, housed in the Sofia Central Synagogue, showcasing Jewish life in Bulgaria
- Sofia Synagogue, one of the largest in Europe, built in Spanish-Moorish style
- Visit Shalom – the Jewish Organization of Bulgaria, the heart of the community today
- Learn the inspiring story of Dimitar Peshev, who helped save 48,000 Bulgarian Jews during WWII
Overnight in Sofia.
Day 11: Departure from Sofia – End of Tour
Breakfast and transfer to Sofia International Airport for your flight back home.
