Jewish Heritage China
Jewish Heritage Tour China – Explore China’s Jewish Past
Discover the rich and surprising Jewish history of China on this unforgettable Jewish Heritage Tour China. This itinerary takes you through China’s most historic Jewish hubs—Tianjin, Harbin, Kaifeng, and Shanghai—each with its own unique story of Jewish life, resilience, and cultural exchange.
For centuries, Jews and Judaism have been part of China’s history, from the ancient Kaifeng community to the Russian Jewish immigrants of Harbin and Tianjin, and the WWII refugees who found sanctuary in Shanghai. Today, you can still see proud architectural testaments, preserved synagogues, and traces of small but vibrant Jewish communities.
Tianjin – Jewish Heritage in a European-Influenced City
Begin your Jewish heritage journey in Tianjin, a port city shaped by its colonial past and known for its European-style architecture. Here, you’ll visit the Tianjin Synagogue, explore former Jewish residences, and walk through the historic Five Avenues and Xiaobailou District. Like in Harbin and Shanghai, most Jews who settled here were of Russian descent, adding a unique cultural layer to the city’s history.
Harbin – Home to East Asia’s Largest Synagogue
In Harbin, once a thriving center for Russian Jewish immigrants, you’ll visit the Harbin New Synagogue, the largest in East Asia, and its museum of Jewish relics. Walk along Central Street, lined with Jewish architectural gems such as the old Jewish Bank, and see the Old Synagogue, now a charming café and hostel. A short drive takes you to the Huangshan Jewish Cemetery, a solemn reminder of the city’s once-vibrant Jewish life.
Kaifeng – Ancient Jewish Roots in China
Perhaps the most famous Jewish community in China, the Kaifeng Jews date back over 1,000 years to the Northern Song Dynasty. On this tour, you’ll see the Jewish Stone Monuments at the Kaifeng Municipal Museum, stroll down Teaching Torah Lane (once the Jewish Quarter), and visit the original synagogue site from 1163 AD. Kaifeng’s history reflects a unique assimilation of Jewish families into Chinese society while preserving elements of their faith.
Shanghai – WWII Sanctuary for Jewish Refugees
The final major stop of your Jewish Heritage Tour China is Shanghai, a city that once sheltered over 20,000 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. You’ll explore the Shanghai Jewish Ghetto in Hongkou District, visit the Ohel Moshe Synagogue, and learn stories of survival and resilience. Stroll through the French Concession, Yu Garden, and along the Bund, where East meets West in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
