The Jewish History of Tangier
Although today’s Jewish community is small—about 150 members—Tangier has one of the oldest Jewish legacies in North Africa. Archaeological finds, including menorah-decorated ceramics from the Carthaginian era, show evidence of Jewish life in Tangier (then Tingis) immediately after the destruction of the First Temple.
During the 5th and 6th centuries CE, Tangier became a refuge for Jews fleeing Visigoth persecution in Spain. These immigrants enriched the region with new cultural, commercial, and industrial skills. Some Berber tribes even converted to Judaism, allowing the Jewish community to flourish peacefully for centuries.
In 1148, according to Abraham Ibn Daud’s Book of Tradition, the community was destroyed by the Almohades. Later, Jews expelled from Spain revived Tangier’s Jewish life, but the Inquisition soon prohibited their presence.
A significant revival occurred in 1661 after the Portuguese ceded Tangier to the British. Yet the prosperity was short-lived—when the English withdrew in 1684, economic decline led the Jews to leave once again.
Renewed Jewish settlement began in 1725. With the help of Moses Maman of Meknes, the Sultan’s treasurer, influential Jewish merchants from Tetuan and Rabat established tax-exempt trading representation in Tangier, revitalizing the Jewish community despite widespread poverty.
Today, Tangier’s Jewish heritage remains visible in its synagogues, cemeteries, and the historic Mellah.
